Four-time Grammy Award recipient Chapman Roberts made his Broadway debut in 1968 in the original cast of Hair, alongside Melba Moore, Diane Keaton and Ben Vereen. A United States Army veteran, he served seven years with the Marne Third Infantry Division (Audie Murphy), conducted the U.S. Army Chorus, and musical directed and performed as Pontius Pilate in a landmark stadium production of Jesus Christ Superstar at Fort Bragg.
Roberts went on to appear on and off Broadway in Salvation, Hello Dolly! (with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway), Jesus Christ Superstar, and became the first African American to play El Gallo in The Fantasticks.
His vocal arrangements feature on eight original Broadway and West End cast albums representing over 30 Tony nominations and three Olivier Awards. His musical direction has shaped major productions including Eubie, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Your Arm’s Too Short to Box with God, Blues in the Night, Five Guys Named Moe and Smokey Joe’s Café
